As someone constantly negotiating feelings of intense anxiety, I have recently found that minimal music, in particular the flavor of minimalism based on chant-like gestures and drones, helps me confront and negotiate those anxious feelings and reorient them towards calm. In this piece I introduce a low drone as a foundation and layer on small melodic fragments from the Passion Chorale that reoccurs in Bach's Saint Matthew Passion. The duration of the melodies is determined by the rhythm of my breath. As such, the duration of each fragment differs and when looped, creates an ever-changing set of harmonies, always rooted in the gently peaceful key of F major.
