Rebecca L. Roberts, Surfacing

Charcoal on paper, 18 x 15 in., 2020

As a counselor and art therapist, I work online with people throughout the world who are joined in the collective tragedy of the COVID-19 crisis. I have witnessed the surfacing of many suppressed wounds since the beginning of the pandemic. These may manifest in heightened anxiety, depression, destructive behaviors, changes in sleep patterns, and increased dream activity. This work depicts a symbolic referencing of these struggles as we face continued isolation and uncertainty. My position gives me the unique vantage point to see our shared experience at this moment in history. Bringing awareness to this commonality can reduce feelings of isolation and highlight the opportunity for healing.
