“with luck, Forward” is a dance film that explores the changing relationship that we are, as a society, experiencing between ourselves, the people in our lives, and the public spaces that we once inhabited. At the start of the quarantine, the collaborators on this project followed a series of choreographic prompts over the course of 6 weeks to develop solos reflecting on the changing nature of their lives and work in isolation. In the film, we take these solos and restage them in public spaces that, once bustling with life, now find themselves empty and still. Each of these solos is accompanied by and connected with ensemble work that is staged using social distancing guidelines (movement cues are delivered over earpieces, and dancers are masked, spaced at 10+ feet apart). Ultimately, the solo and ensemble work together serves to remind audiences that they are not alone in their struggle of adapting to these unstable and revolutionary grounds, but provides a hopeful reminder that, while the road ahead looks different and unfamiliar, there is a road, indeed. “with luck, Forward” is a dance film that explores the changing relationship that we are, as a society, experiencing between ourselves, the people in our lives, and the public spaces that we once inhabited. Everyone is searching for the "new normal" and simultaneously wary of treading too lightly when going back into once familiar territories. Processes that were once unconscious, such as how we behave in public spaces and interact with others, have now become conscious and deliberate, often causing confusion, fear, and anxiety as we rewrite our neural pathways.

By interweaving four solos created during the quarantine and bringing them into public spaces, this film not only explores the challenges and triumphs of navigating these unfamiliar times as individuals, but also as a collective society. For dance, one of the art forms most deeply impacted by social distancing measures, this film serves as an exploration of the new possibilities that these limitations have created for us.
