Anne Vencel, The Red Butterfly

Wool needle-felting, wrapped on canvas, 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. each, 2020

During this pandemic and stay-at-home period, I've noticed a loss of so many things and ways that I used to support myself, not only financially but emotionally as well. The loss of touching those I love inspired this work. I find solace in that I can still touch nature without the fear of passing infection or being infected. Nature has become a refuge and we can still find normalcy in interacting there, like this girl hoping, chasing, waiting to see if the butterfly will land on her hand —a connection for the human soul.
